If you haven’t jumped on the essential oil band wagon then it’s time you did! While it isn’t a new trend, it’s one that’s making a major comeback. Everything from beauty, immune system, energy, anxiety, cancer prevention, skin disorders, and many other issues can be addresses with these natural oils. The old saying, everything can be cured by mother nature has profound meaning when associated with essential oils. I will walk you through some of the basics as to how to pick your oils, and the benefits of Myrrh essential oils!
Basic History of Myrrh
It’s been around for hundreds of years, dating back to the times of Jesus laying in a manger. The bible notes that one of the three kings gave gifts of frankincense, myrrh and gold. So important was this that it was fit for a gift to baby Jesus. Whether you are a Christian or not, the fact that it’s noted in such an important book in history gives myrrh an iconic place in times of the past. It was also used for clarification of the body during times of mummification.
Myrrh is derived from tree sap and is closely related to frankincense. The sap of the Commiphora myrrha tree is used to make this oil. It can be found in Africa and the throughout the Middle East. The tree is cut, the sap is dried, and the oil is created through a steam distillation process.
Picking your essential oils
Numerous brands on the market claim that they are 100% essential oils. However, after testing a variety of companies, it’s clear that you get what you pay for! Young living is one used by my best friend Amanda, she swears by the quality of the products as well as their diffusors which are made of medical grade plastics (see below).
Tips for Picking Essential Oils
- Go organic: these oils are dense which means their concentrated forms are meant to deliver high amounts. You don’t want high concentrations of chemical ladden oils on or in your body. For this reason, organic is a must!
- Alcohol is a Deal Breaker: If you buy oils and smell any hint of alcohol, it means the oil has been stretched. It is no longer considered 100% essential oil. Get rid of it, and find another brand. If you are buying it in a store, you can open the lid and smell it before purchasing.
- Look at reviews: Check online sources for reviews from other buyers. Amazon can be a great way to sift through brands quickly.
- Cheap isn’t always best: These oils can be expensive due to the high quality concentrations. Cheap could mean that they are stretching the oils with other ingrediants to save money and cut costs.
- No Plastic Please – You’ll want to purchase products that come in dark glass bottles if possible. Always avoid plastic since toxins can leach into the concentrated oils.
The Benefits of Myrrh Essential Oils
Myrrh: Recently I have been using this oil before bed on my face and massaging it into my neck for thyroid healing. While both of these uses are great ways to heal, Myrrh has also been used for various other remedies.
1.Potent Antioxidant – To heal wounds of all sorts as well as other ailments.
“A 2010 study in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology found that myrrh could protect against liver damage due to its high antioxidant capacity (source).”
2.) Anti Cancer Properties
“Researchers found that myrrh inhibited growth in eight different types of cancer cells, specifically gynecological cancers (source).”
3.) Anti Fungal and Antibacterial. If you have skin issues, athletes foot, ring worm, warts, or acne, myrrh is the essential oil that can aid in faster recovery and prevention! Apply it directly to the affected area for full strength healing or use a carrying oil to spread it over larger areas.
4.) Antiperasidic – The benefits of Myrrh are SO powerful that it’s able to knock out pesky parasites! It’s been used in medication to stop the cycle of breading and hatching. This is particularly import when it comes to parasites that have been transmitted through sea algae and other plants.
5.) Relax, Unwind, Destress – Trouble sleeping or winding down? Using myrrh in your bath water, lotions before bed, or during stressful times at work can help you to calm down and relax.
So how do you use this stuff!?
The benefits of Myrrh can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled, ingested and even used as a compress.
Diffusers can be an easy way to get the benefits of this ancient essential oil. Place it in a bottle with Diffuser sticks to freshen the air, help with allergies and alleviate tension. You can also inhale it directly from the bottle. You can also use specific essential oil diffusers that used ionized steam to create a soothing and healing environment no matter where you are! In the car, the office, at home, or in the hotel while traveling!
Apply it Directly to the Skin – You can use it at full concentration or choose to use a carrying oil such as almond oil, grape seed oil, or my favorite jojoba oil. Mix several drops into the carrying oil then apply. This works well when applying to larger areas of the body. Jojoba oil is my favorite because it’s properties mimic the oils of the human skin. This makes it a great choice for applying to the face.
Mouth Rinse – Only do this with food grade based oil that are free of additives and perfumes. It’s commonly added to natural mouth washes, and toothpastes due to its natural antibacterial properties and healing affects. Great for gingervitis and mouth sores, and overall healing.
*The FDA has approved myrrh as a safe food additive, taking concentrated forms or high doses can have unwanted side effects.
Cold Compress – Add a couple drops and mix into a cold compress then add a couple drops directly on the skin. Allow the oils with the compress to penetrate the body to increase healing and decrease inflamation.
Hypothyroidism – As I mentioned above, Myrrh can be used to aid in the recovery of the thyroid. Personally I’ve noticed an overall improvement in my symptoms since using this at night. Apply 2 – 3 drops directly on the neck in the area of the thyroid. Massage, then let the soothing smell and affects of the myrrh take place.
The benefits of Myrrh are endless and I’ve only begun to touch on some of the positive affects that it can have on the body!
