This class has been gaining popularity for the past few months, taking traditional barre method workouts to a whole new level. But what is it, exactly? Here is how founder, Sadie Lincoln describes it :
“Most barre-based classes use a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and Pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training (holding your body still while you contract a specific set of muscles) combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements.”
The first studio opened back in 2008, targeting women who was in search of a quick but effective workout. Among the many benefits, barre helps in improving posture, balance, strength, increases muscle definition, flexibility, promotes weight loss and reduces stress. Because of the low impact nature of it, it is safe for pregnant women as well as those with certain injuries.
Like any workouts, this 60 minute class targets your full body. The first half focuses on upper body via free weights and planks, whereas the second half is spent working on legs, using your own body weight and the barre to help you with the movements. Your core is engaged from beginning to end. The cooldown is structured to promote a quick and optimum muscle recovery. While it may not have a specific cardio portion, the isometric elements and the way the class is structured will be sure to get your heart rate up, as well as building your muscles, which in turn will increase the calories burned. If you’re picturing a bunch of people in tight dresses and tutus, you’re in the wrong class. All you need is a comfortable yoga-type outfit. No shoes, and if you must wrap, go for something that’s slip-proof. Since the birth of the program, many variations of the barre method appeared ranging from cardio to Xtend Barre ™ , which uses an Xtend barre stick for added resistance. If you’re looking to try something new but challenging, or just wish to glide a bit more gracefully, find a studio and get your plier on. Let us know how you like it the barre method classes!
