Eating carrots, working the muscles and covering up are only few things experts recommend to preserve and sharpen your eyesight, but there are many other mistakes we all make that can actually have a detrimental effect on our vision. Some we don’t even think of. How can we care so much about staying healthy, working out, but we neglect our eyes. Here are the most common mistakes that are ruining your eyes. How many are you guilty off?
Dropping the shades
I’m definitely guilty of this. Sunglasses make me feel weird, I have to force myself to grab them. Those UV lights can cause melanomas and carcinomas on the eyelids and can increase the risk of macular deterioration. And don’t be fooled by winter. Those UV rays will find their way through. Better be safe then sorry. Just keep a pair in your car or in your bag. They’ll come in handy.
Rubbing
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? Well..the second after cursing your alarm? Rubbing your eyes, trying to get them to open and function. I’m not talking about occasionally getting an eyelash or something irritating out, I mean chronic rubbing. It results in the thinning of the cornea, it becomes pointy, distorting your vision. It’s best to keep the hands where you can see them and maybe use water or eye drops to flush out whatever doesn’t belong.
Showering/swimming with contacts on
All pools/faucets have the potential to carry acanthamoeba. This type of amoeba can cause some serious damage if it gets stuck under your contacts. It can transfer to your eye, eat away you cornea and lead to blindness. Not a very nice prospect. I know taking contacts in and out is a bit of a hassle, but I’d take that over the loss of my sight. If you do forget to take them out, be sure to disinfector toss them. Never rinse them with tap water. Always use the contact solution.
Sleeping in your contacts
We forget or we get lazy and just leave them in, giving the bacteria that may have found it’s way to your eyes a chance to nestle in. Also the decreased air flow that comes along with long-term lense wearing reduces the body’s ability to fight infections. Just make sure to take them out, it will save you a lot of trouble down the road.
Not changing contacts often enough
Sometimes it’s easier to just use them til they rip. But it’s actually one of the worst things you can do, especially if you don’t use them that often. No matter how diligent you are with cleaning them, those solutions will only take off so much. Eventually bacteria will pile up, and from container goes straight to your eyes, making you more susceptible to infections.
Not Replacing You Makeup Frequently Enough
As women we figure, we use it until it runs out right? Wrong! Especially when it comes to eye makeup. Bacteria from the environment and contact with other people can build up with the use of products. Keep track of the expiration dates on your makeup, don’t share then and definitely don’t keep them and use them for years on end.
I hope this entry was eye opening (pun intended). I know I was guilty of at least two, because I didn’t think much of it. I’ll definitely be more careful in the future. How many Don’ts are you guilty of?
