As spring and summer approach rapidly, people are rushing in to get their “Base tan.” Sales at tanning studios are beginning to increase and with that so is the amount of bacteria. Tanning is known to give you skin cancer but many people over look what could be growing on their body when they climb into a tanning bed.
Tests were done on several tanning beds in New York’s upper east side …..
Staph bacteria was found, as was the bacteria in fecal matter. A scratch can let in either, potentially causing whiteheads or abscesses, said Dr. Darrell S. Rigel, a clinical professor of dermatology at N.Y.U. and an author of the study (source).
While things like staph and fecal matter are bad, there is also tons of other bacteria that is carried out of the tanning bed. Sure, tanning studios send the attendant to clean the a bed after it has been used, however, they might not be cleaning the way they should. Our only solution for this problem is to use the standing tanning bed. Bring your hand sanitizer and clean your hands once you step out. This way of tanning helps you to avoid surfaces that have touched by other peoples’ naked bodies!
