The FDA has been criticized over and over for multiple reasons. However, in this case, we should be thanking the FDA for protecting the U.S. citizens from food that could be plagued with radiation. A large bulk of our food source comes from Japan in the form of milk, dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables. Due to the nuclear crisis over seas the FDA has prohibited the import of foods from this area of Japan. All imports from this area also have to be screened for nuclear waste.
Japanese authorities already have barred the shipment of raw milk and spinach from one or more of the prefectures because of radiation concerns.
“If it happens to get out of Japan, this is another mechanism to keep it from getting into this country,” an FDA spokeswoman said.
There is no indication that any radiation-tainted food products have entered the U.S., the spokeswoman said.
The precise quantities of affected products normally slated for import into the U.S. from the four prefectures is not known, but is believed to be very small, she said (source).
Our hearts go out to all the people in Japan and the suffering that is taking place. Radiation poisoning is something that shouldn’t be toyed with. We are thankful that both governments are doing their part to prevent the spread of nuclear waste.
