If you have children, grades might not be the only thing on their report cards. In the near future your kid could come barreling through the door after school with a different kind of report card.
Some states are now adding BMI (Body Mass Index) to report cards. The goal of this new policy is to keep parents aware of their child’s health. It’s also to combat obesity at a young age.
While BMI on report cards seems like a good notion, it could actually “snow ball” into something more serious. Keep in mind that BMI is based off a height to weight ratio. If you have a child that plays sports and has more muscle mass , then their BMI will be high due to muscle weight. Psychologically, this might actually lead to self esteem issues and possibly eating disorders. Health and fitness shouldn’t be about a number, it should be about how it makes you feel !
