Roaming through target I saw a green, yes green, coke bottle. The color change was alarming so I immediatly gravitated towards the bottle. After looking it over it was clear that this was supposed to be the ‘healthier’ version of this classic drink. It’s sweetned with cane sugar (not corn syrup) and stevia. This new soda is named Coca Cola Life, but is it a better alternative to Diet Coke and regular Coke. Here’s my break down….
Is Coca Cola Life Better Then Diet Coke ?
If you look at a standard can of Coca Cola Life you will see that it contains 86 calories and 22 grams of sugar. While we all know that sugar is the devil, it’s better to have real sugar, then aspartame, which is a well known poison (created on accident by chemists during the time of the depression era as a nerve gas).
Also keep in mind that “Diet” coke has now been shown to be anything BUT diet. The original idea behind aspartame was BLOCK sugar and prevent weight gain. However, after many studies, they have found that this is NOT the case. Diet drinks have been shown to increase hunger, increase carbohydrate cravings, and stimulate fat storage and weight gain (source).
Coca Cola life is void of aspartame and uses Stevia instead. While it still contains a source of sugar, the sugar helps to mask the bitter taste of the stevia, which allows the calories to be lower. Stevia is also considered a natural source since it comes from a leaf. If you have to choose between nerve gas (Diet Coke) and some cane sugar mixed with a leaf (stevia), I would reach for the latter 😉
Is Coca Cola Life Better Then Coca Cola ?
In my opinion YES. Regular Coke is sweetened with corn syrup. While the newer, greener version of coke has both cane sugar and stevia. The stevia allows the sugar and calorie content to be lower. While it’s not a drink I think you should consume each day, it’s one of those beverages that you could have on occasion.
If you are one of the many people addicted to Diet Coke or Coca Cola, this could be a healthier less detrimental option. YES it still has sugar, and it’s not my top choice as a personal trainer, BUT it’s better then more sugar and more chemicals.
My Review On Coca Cola Life
I used to be in love with Diet Coke and to some point still am. I no longer keep it in my fridge, I only drink it with food 😉 and I only have it once a week (if that). I tested out the new Coca Cola Life in the bottle and was shocked at how amzing it was. I thought it would have a slightly bitter taste from the stevia (like other products) but it didn’t. It also didn’t contain any xylitol. Other sodas include xylitol to cut the bitter taste of stevia without adding extra calories. However, that diet sweetener gives me immediate stomach cramps that last all day!
I did think that this drink was VERY sweet and they could have toned down the sugar to half and increased the amount of stevia to drop the calories even lower.
In my opinion this beverage could help to cut the amount of sugar people are drinking and the amount of chemicals. It’s not a free pass to drink as much as you like but it does offer an alternative.
