The holidays are upon us, we’re all packed, ready to fly to our destination to reunite with family and spend some quality time together. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about with all the feasting going on, we also have to dodge the unhealthy options the airports have to offer. Here are a few fitness tips to help you make the best choices possible.
Staying Healthy While Traveling
Bring food with you
With most airlines no longer offering complimentary meals on board, you are restricted to their limited purchase options, which tend to be on the unhealthy side. Same for food courts. It’s rare to find something that’s not fast food or at an affordable price. You are much better off packing your own meal and snacks. Just be sure to check what foods you’re allowed to take in. Things that are known to be linked to allergies, such as peanuts will definitely not make the cut.
Eat before you leave
If you’re anything like me, you finish packing a few seconds before the shuttle picks you up, and you fly out the door in a hurry. You get to the airport, famished, and everything looks good. There’s nothing worse than shopping when Hungry. You’ll end up with that combo chinese tray filled with fats, sugar and sodium. Avoid this pitfall and make sure to eat of have a bar on your way over.
You do not get a free pass
For some reason we think we’re on vacation, it’s a special time, we can get away with murder. Wrong! There’s nothing special about food courts; don’t look at them as a treat that you can only get this one time.
Hydrate
Sometimes dehydration manifests as hunger. Make sure you drink plenty. I know water at the airport costs an arm and a leg. I like to take in an empty bottle and refill it inside. Save me a buck or two…or ten.
It’s ok to be a little hungry
You may feel a little hungry, and that’s fine. A few hours won’t kill you. Of course if you really can’t help it, by all means grab a quick bite, but be reasonable. Try to go for salads or mexican food rich in beans and some other protein. But don’t go to town.
These are just a few basic fitness tips to help you avoid the major mistakes people make at airports. Safe travels!
