We look to doctors for healing, lawyers to solve our legal woes, contractors to fix our house but who’s fixing our bodies? As you grow older, you realize that while money affords you to security to live, it doesn’t garuntee how you will be living. Will you be the millionaire with 3 cars, a yacht, and a beach house and no mobility to use any of them? Celebrities figured this out early, not only do they see their body as a “non negotiable,” they also see it as their future. While we may not always see the personal trainers in the public eye, every celebrity has their own secret weapon. So how do you choose your own personal trainer?
How to Choose a Personal Trainer
REAL trainers are those who see the body as a whole. The stress manifesting in muscle pain, the weaknesses from office jobs, and the nutritional deficits causing mood swings, tiredness, and cravings. The True trainers are your friends, your therapists, your protector, and your healer both in spirit and physical well-being.
So how do you find the trainer I’m discussing. Is the guy or gal that charges the least making minimal money and hopping from door to door your best bet? Or is it the trainer that knows their worth and charges top dollar?
The best personal trainers have experience, personality, as well as, an analytical brain that looks past the physical to find the root causes of weight, imbalance, and psychology. The one that pushes you when you need it, and backs off when you are having a rough day. The one that sees your food allergies and vitamin deficiencies before you do and your strengths when you thought you were weak.
Experience is key – the more you train the more you know. The more you observe the human body in all forms the more you learn. While certifications give you the framework, clients become your true teachers. Don’t get me wrong, both are part of a qualified trainer so that’s my next point.
Education – A bachelors shows dedication, hard work, and a persistent mentality. While other certifications such as NASM, ACE, ACSM, and ISSA top the list for some of the best certifications. Variation and a variety of certification shows a true thirst for knowledge, another key to a great personal trainer.
Personal Story – While everyone thinks their personal trainer was “born that way” it may be best if they weren’t. Some of the best trainers have been in your shoes. They lost tons of weight and changed their bodies and life for the better. On the flip side, they could have been naturally thin and worked hard to gain muscle. Whatever their story; ask about their motivation to do what they do and find their passion, because in the end that’s what gets them out of bed to help you realize yours.
So, if you’re thinking about hiring a trainer, keep all of these tips in mind. Find a trainer with a passion to help you, show up for you, and give you all of their experience, one session at a time.
