All my trainer friends do it. I can’t imagine doing it. But it seems like a little fasting might actually be good for you. We all know the most religions use fasting as a way of showing faith or penitence. Fasting has been getting more popular in the work out world.
I know girls that “fast”, but really they’re just anorexic. Not eating all day and then eating one fatty meal late at night will not help you. When you starve your body every day you don’t end up losing weight you actually slow down your metabolism which makes you gain weight in the long run. So let’s talk about some of the pros and cons of REAL fasting.
Weight Lose
Pro:
You do lose weight because when you fast you’re forced to dip into energy stored in your body hence making you lose weight.
Con:
Sometimes when fasting you lose your appetite when you stop, but sometimes once you stop fasting and start eating again you hunger hormones are quantified and your appetite increase.
Detoxifying
Pro: You do detoxify your liver, kidney and colon when sweating.
Con: There’s no real evidence that your body needs to be detoxified.
Longer Quality Life
Pro:
A study showed that skipping a meal once a month helped reduce the risk of clogged arteries.
Con:As far as lifespan goes, there is no clear evidence that you live longer because researchers haven’t followed someone for a lifetime.
How does this all come into play when exercising?
When you do cardio your two fuel sources are carbs and fats. That being said when you lack carbs from fasting, there is a chance that you may be burning more fat and who doesn’t want to burn more fat?!
There was a study on two bicyclist, where one fasted(overnight) and the other didn’t. They found that the one that fasted burned more fat in the 20-30 minute mark and it continued into the 50-60 minute mark. So who’s not eating tomorrow morning before hitting the treadmill? ME!!!
Fast Away,
