In previous research they claimed that sitting decreased your life expectancy and created weight issues. However, in order to reverse the affects of sitting, it was necessary to hit the gym and ward off fat and disease. New research suggests that your daily bout at the gym may not be the only thing you need to stay alive if you spend your life behind a desk.
123,216 individuals (53,440 men and 69,776 women) who had no history of cancer, heart attack, strokeor emphysema that were enrolled in the ACS’s Cancer Prevention II study in 1992. The study took place from 1992 – 2006. Over this 13 year period, researched watched and compared the amount of exercises and sitting (both at work and at home).
Women who reported more than six hours per day of sitting (outside of work) were 37 percent more likely to die during the time period studied than those who sat fewer than three hours a day. Men who sat more than six hours a day (also outside of work) were 18 percent more likely to die than those who sat fewer than three hours per day. The association remained virtually unchanged after adjusting for physical activity level. Associations were stronger for cardiovascular disease mortality than for cancer mortality (source).
Don’t go out and revoke your gym memberships just yet!!! Just make sure that if you are sitting at work all day, you get into the gym and stay active when you get home from your nightly workout. Also try to stay active on your weekends and on your breaks at work.
