Walmart is known for its low priced products and groceries but not necessarily for its high quality food. In efforts to attract a wider range of buyers, the corporate giant is going organic. They are also hoping to give their store a modern face lift by offering a wide range of healthy products. This change could make Walmart the largest seller of organic foods, surpassing Wholefoods. They are already the leader in organic milk!
In order to boost sales and get an edge in the market, top suppliers (Kellogg, Kraft, Pepsi, Yoplait Yogurt and General Mills) have jumped on the band wagon to create organic products.
While this idea seems like it will lower costs and make organic foods more accessible, advocates for organic foods believe that this could ruin the market for chemical free foods. The fear is that to reduce prices Walmart will outsource produce to China to cut costs and stay at the top of the market.
Overall, this idea seems like a good one. It could lower costs of healthier foods for everyone to afford. It could also lower the amount of disease in the U.S. as well.
