What do the stickers on your produce really mean? Many people overlook the sticker and view the larger signs in the fruits and veggie section. The labels can be a nuisance to remove but it gives you insight into how your food was grown.
Decode Your Produce Sticker
- Pesticides Present (Conventional) – 4 numbers on the tag of the label means that your produce was grown in the traditional sense with the use of pesticides. The final 4 digits on the label are also an identifying factor for what type of fruit or vegetable it is.
- Genetically Modified (GMO) – This label has 5 digits and starts with the number “8.”
- Organic – If the produce is grown organically it will have a 5 digit number but start with a number “9”
Fitness Tips – Keep in mind that the stickers on the fruit are not edible, however, the adhesive on the stickers is considered “food grade.”
“The FDA considers the adhesive on the stickers to be a food-grade additive. According to a representative at InTouchLabels, the stickers are inedible but digestible, simply meaning they will pass through your digestive system if you happen to accidentally eat one—but don’t expect to get any nutritional value from them (source).”
Personally, I had no idea that you could look at any piece of fruit and figure out it’s background. This is such a fun trick to decode your food and eat better.
