Walk Today, Don’t Run
If you’re a runner, then this post might make you an unhappy person…and it’ll make you a “lazier” person. Truth talk!
Walking is the new running!
I personally, have not been having a great time running lately, so when I realized that walking is basically the same as running calories wise, I was STOKED. What a great way to end 2012?!
Let’s break it down.
People have a big misconception: You burn more calories running than walking because there’s more movement, sweat, etc. WRONG!
Fit Fact #1- Did you know that if you walk or run at a pace of 5 MPH, which would be about 1 mile per 12 minutes, then you are burning the exact same calories whether you walk or run? Truth!
Okay so let me clarify for you all. You must “fast” walk. Fast walking is the same as jogging. So instead of going as slow as possible walk a little faster than normal.
Now, a lot of you are probably thinking, “Well, if I run I can get my work out faster and burn calories faster.” That’s true-ish. Let’s be honest, when you go for a jog, you are just counting down the time until it’s over. That’s hardly the case with walking because it’s done more at leisurely pace sooooooo, if you go on a walk you’re more likely to walk a longer distance hence burning more calories. Ta-Da!
At the end of the day, I think more people are apt to walk than run, so there’s a huge positive. When you think of walking it seems way more doable if you haven’t worked out in a week than say, a run around the block. So walk on!
Walking Always,

Love this article..walking can be as satisfying as running!!
Thanks for pointing out the health benefits of walking. I’m a distance walker who is starting to run, and one big difference I have found is that walking is better than running for me at clearing my head and relaxing me, even if I am doing a strenuous 18 mile walk. Another bonus is that it uses different muscles than running, so it might be a good way to mix things up with your workouts once in awhile.
