How Ab Fab’s Joanna Lumley Stays Patsy Thin

Joanna Lumley, now 70 has been able to maintain her modelesque body for decades. Her Absolutely Fabulous character, Patsy Stone, once joked that she hadn’t eaten since 1973.  There may be a little bit of truth within the writing of this iconic character. The release of the new Absolutely Fabulous movie sent crowds of people all over the world rushing to the movie theaters to get their fix of the bumbling Edina, and the snarky, sarcastic Patsy.  It’s been reported to have made 22 million at the box offices, thus far.

The similarities between her on screen character and her real life have some astounding similarities.  She was quoted as saying,

‘I don’t eat any meals. I eat a bit throughout the day if I’m hungry, but not a big meal.

‘I’ll have some nuts or maybe some crisps and that’s enough.’

The similarities don’t stop there.  In the 60’s Lumley was at the peak of her modeling career, took up smoking and is still currently smoking today.

She admits to never exercising, eating a vegetarian diet, and compensating the lack of exercise by doing everything in her life with an added amount of “vigor.”  Keeping busy is her secret to staying thin.

‘I don’t go to gyms, but I do rush about. I do stuff with vigor, such as housework, gardening and going up the stairs two at a time.

‘I’m full of energy and never ill, and I haven’t eaten meat for 40 years. It’s no coincidence (source).’

While she may not exercise, she’s also not eating sweets.  She hates cake, and stays away from foods packed with sugar.

Some may shake their head about the fact that Lumley rarely ever eats breakfast, and never eats lunch.  However, she may be doing something similar to whats trending right now called “intermittent fasting.”   Intermittent fasting, has become the new “it thing.”  This sort of fasting requires skipping breakfast or eating a breakfast void of carbohydrates. However, she takes it to the next level by removing lunch.

‘I quite often don’t have breakfast and I never have lunch. I find it helps not to wake my stomach up because if I had a good big breakfast, I would be ready for a snack at 11 and then a three-course lunch, then I’d be ready for tea, then a cocktail and then an enormous dinner (source).’

What we can all learn from Patsy Stone AKA Joanna Lumley 

  • Don’t eat sweets
  • Minimize hard to digest meats (or go crazy and go vegetarian)
  • Stay “busy” in your daily life and do all of your tasks with an extra amount of “vigor.”
  • Eat small meals when hungry
  • Intermittent fasting could help you overcome some plateaus also

 

While Joanna Lumley may not be the stereotypical celebrity who works out 5 days a week and avoids all toxins, there’s still several things she’s doing right!  Use her selective fitness tips to your advantage and make the most of your fabulous life.
