Breakfast Mishaps – Hold the Weight Gain

October 22, 2014 by Adria Ali Leave a Comment

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, kicking off your metabolism and leveling out your blood sugar first thing in the morning, yet many opt to skip it.  Even those who are diligent about it make some of  these mishaps.  Avoid the pitfalls of breakfast eating with these fitness tips.

“Our research showed that people experience a dramatic decline in cravings for sweet foods when they eat breakfast,” said Heather Leidy, an assistant professor of nutrition and exercise physiology. “However, breakfasts that are high in protein also reduced cravings for savory – or high-fat – foods. On the other hand, if breakfast is skipped, these cravings continue to rise throughout the day (source).”

Have Your Breakfast Without the Weight Gain …

Mind what you eat.

It’s easy to reach for the first available thing, something quick and convenient. Granola bars, shakes, or even a donut at your local deli. All filled with chemicals and sugar. Prep your meal the night before if you have to, but don’t make bad decisions due to convenience.

Skip the juice.

For some reason juices became a “healthy” thing, but they pack up to 23 g of sugar per serving and most are made out of concentrate. You are better off opting for a piece of fruit or press the juice yourself.

Have your pancake and eat it too.

Waffles and pancakes are a staple, make them yourself, use whole wheat flour, no added sugar. Add some eggs or greek yogurt for extra protein to fill you up more.  You can also use egg whites to decrease your fat intake.

Avoid the sweets

Nothing like a chocolate croissant for the morning with your coffee, but I while agree it is absolutely delicious, it will also spike your blood sugar, resulting in a crash, making you fatigued and hungry again.

Mind your coffee

Don’t worry, I’m not taking your coffee, you can have it. Actually up to two cups is even beneficial for you. But mind your ad-ons. Skipped the creamers, the fake sugars, all the beautiful sounding creations at starbucks and go with a simple cup. You don’t need the extra calories that early in the morning.

Always be prepared

If you must run out in the morning ( and let’s be honest, who hasn’t overslept and had to fly out the door?), have some healthy snacks ready in the car. Some bars are better than others, you can also grab a couple of hard boiled eggs with toast. Don’t starve your body.

Mind your buffet

While the selection is certainly enticing, be smart about your choices. Instead of the bacon, sausages, and pastries, go with the yogurt, granola or fruits. Much better options. And mind your portion sizes. It’s very easy to overeat when you have an endless supply of goodies in front of you.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

While coffee is a liquid, it’s also a diuretic; it will dehydrate you. Add a big glass of water to your breakfast. It will not only keep the fluids at level, it will make you feel fuller.

Use these little fitness tips and make your breakfast mandatory. Be smart and fuel your body the right way. Let us know how it goes!
