Customized Organs Could Help You Live Longer

While watching a tv show I was amazed as I saw scientists grow completely NEW organs made from their own genetic code.  I watched as they slowly  nursed growing cells all the way through life as they eventually multiplied into full blown organs and appendages.

“And you can see here the mold shaped like an ear. And then what we do is we start seeding these with cells. And then this is actually the fully engineered ear,” he said. “The molds are designed to degrade over time. So as the tissue forms the mold goes away (source).”

So why grow new organs instead of using implants???  The chance that your body will reject the organ is very minimal since it’s made of your own tissue.  Also, the donor list for organs is VERY high.  More and more people are having health issues and there never seems to be enough organs to go around.

The research is not limited to organs.  It can also create ears, ligaments, bladders, and muscle tissue.  The possibilities are endless.  The scientist on the show said

The idea is not to create a whole human being made from redeveloped parts but rather to increase the life span of those already living.

I think this new development could open doors to a whole new field of medicine.  It could also increase our longevity.  The only draw back to a longer life span is the financial side of living.  Everyone better be saving their money!  You could live to be twice as long!
