Earlier in May, heartthrob, footballer and fashion icon David Beckham turned 40. Would you guess his age? Probably not. Beckham has aged remarkably well for someone with four children and a high-flying career. So well, in fact, that we’re wondering what his secret is. Here are some possible reasons Beckham is looking so amazing in his later years.
He’s not a drinker
Over the years, Beckham has often been quoted as saying he isn’t a big drinker, compared to most of his footballer friends. He realized early on in his sporting career that his prowess on the playing field was going to be a lot better without alcohol. Could that be one reason he has aged so well? Well, yes. Scientists and medical professionals have been saying for years that alcohol consumption accelerates ageing, not just in terms of sagging and wrinkling skin, but also for our internal organs. We’re pretty sure the La Liga betting odds for his former club, Real Madrid, would have been different if Becks had been a binge drinker.

He dresses for his age
Let’s face it, Beckham has given the fashion police quite a few scares in the past. Remember that sarong? Thankfully, like a fine wine, Beckham has only become more refined in his elder years. These days, he is more likely to be seen in sharp tailoring, crisp tees and rugged shirts, which he carries off in an effortless way. Men in your 40s take note. Dressing well, with the right cut for your body shape, can shave years off your physique.
He has a positive attitude
One of the biggest causes of premature ageing is, of course, stress. The strain of meeting deadlines, working long hours and competing with our co-workers can leave us feeling and looking run down. Not so with “Golden Balls”. When you look back at his career, Beckham has always followed his heart and done the things he loves, reducing his stress and boosting his happiness instead. Take his decision to play for Real back in 2003: “It’s a tough challenge,” he said, “but if I didn’t believe I could do the job, I wouldn’t have taken it on.” It’s this positive, no-nonsense attitude that keeps him on top of his game.
It’s his job to be fit
Not only did Beckham choose to follow his passion, he was also lucky enough to make the football pitch his office. Physical exercise combats stress, releasing feel-good hormones into the bloodstream and releasing tension. Not only that, it’s also said to have powerful anti-ageing effects. So, a career in football was bound to keep him looking young and fit. Happy 40th, Becks!
