Fat Cells Re-Invent Themselves

    Whoa!  I read this article by “fitsugar” and was amazed.  This new study about fat has some shocking news… read below and be amazed!

As we get older, we exercise to make us feel good, but also to burn calories and keep our weight down. If you thought you were burning away fat cells, I’m sorry to bust your bubble, but a new study has revealed that you’re stuck with the number of fat cells you have acquired by about age 20. When you gain or lose weight, the amount of fat inside each fat cell is changing, but not the number of fat cells you have. Even obese people who have gastric bypass surgery (modifying the intestinal tract or reducing the size of the stomach) won’t be able to change the number of fat cells they have.

This new info might help to explain why people who were overweight as children or adolescents have a harder time losing weight, as they get older. That’s because some kind of signal tells the body to create a new fat cell if one dies, in order to maintain the same number of fat cells all the time. Now researchers think they can figure out how to stop the body from getting that message, so when a fat cell dies, it doesn’t create a new one to take its place. Also, if the number of fat cells is decided by the time a person turns 20, scientists think that they could figure out how to keep that number low before people hit that magic age. This all sounds interesting, but it also worries me to mess around with people’s bodies, especially children. What do you think?
