Fit Tip Beauty – Eat Your Way To Better Hair

February 10, 2014 by Adria Ali Leave a Comment

Hair is one of the best features to judge health.  If you have dry, brittle hair something isn’t right.   If you’re losing hair hormones could be imbalanced.  Going grey at an early age is a sign that your calcium intake is too low.   Our appearance can be the fortune teller of our future and of our past.   Correcting these issues can be easy if you know what you want.  Eating your way to better hair could solve nutritional imbalances while making you have the look you want!

what to eat for healthy hair

What To Eat For Softer Touchable Hair

Pollution,  free radicals for UV rays, and even your blow drier can change the texture of your hair.   Dry brittle hair lacks that soft touchable feeling.  The best way to fight back is by eating loads of antioxidants!   The best ones to bring back your softer side are called polyphenols which can be found in deeply colored fruits.

Eat:  Blackberries, Cherries and Blueberries for softer hair.

Topical Aid For Softer Hair:  Moroccan Oil

What To Eat to Make Your Hair Grow

If you want your hair to grow in a hurry then you must eat vitamin C.    Vitamin C is the building block for collagen which is essential for producing new hair cells (Dr. Bowe).   Think you don’t need it?   The average hair growth is 1 cm per month, yikes! The recommended amount for vitamin C is 75 milligrams pre day.   To hit your daily RDA for vitamin C, Dr. Bowe recommends using these amounts below alone or in combination with each other.

  • 1/2 cup of red bell pepper (95 mg)
  • 1 cup of strawberries (89 mg)
  • A medium orange (70 mg)
  • 1/2 a grapefruit (39 mg)

Eat:   Vitamin C – citrus fruits and bell peppers

Topical Aid For Hair Growth:  Cedar Extract – Carol’s Daughter Fortifying Scalp Spray is a suggested brand.

What to Eat to Stop Your Hair From Breaking

Fragile hair means weak and brittle hair.  Keeping your hair from breaking could be related to your biotin levels.   While Dr. Bowe says there isn’t definitive research to support this claim, it’s been found that people lacking biotin have hair that breaks more easily.  The daily suggested amount is 30 micrograms.   Foods such as eggs, avocado and salmon can keep your hair from breaking.   They are all rich sources of biotin but you have to get enough.

  • Eggs – 13 -25 mcg
  • Avocado – 2 -6 mcg
  • Salmon – 4 – 5 mcg

Eat:  Eggs, Salmon and Avocado

Topical Aid for Hair Breaking:  A leave – in conditioner that contains proteins such as wheat or soy.

What to Eat For Shiny Hair

Need extra shine for your dull and lack luster hair??   Shine it up with omega – 3s !   These healthy fats keep your heart healthy and your hair turning heads.   According to the American Heart Association, you should have 3.5 ounces of omega rich fish at least twice a week.   Not a meat eater?  You can replace the fish with flaxseed oil, or walnuts.  Eating these oils also tells  your hair follicles to regulate their oil production, meaning your hair is just the right amount of shine without being too oily.

Eat: Salmon, sardines, flaxseed oil, and Walnuts

Topical Aid For Shiny Hair:  A serum with wheat her, almond oil or rice bran.

What To Eat for Thicker Hair

The three growth phases of hair are, growth, transition and rest.   The more hair you have in the “Growth phase,” the fuller your hair looks (Elise Olsen, M.D.).  In order to keep the hair active and growing, you must have enough protein.  The 3 magic bullets for thicker hair are iron, zinc, and protein.   The magic foods for thinker hair are, lean red meat, dark meat turkey, kidney beans, and oysters.  Shoot for ..

  • 46 grams of protein (at least)
  • 18 mg of iron
  • 8 mg of zinc

Eat:  Lean red meat, dark meat turkey, kidney beans, and oysters.

Topical Aid for Thicker Hair:  Products that contain vegetable proteins or acacia gum can temporarily increase hair thickness.

Who knew your hair needed so many different factors to look healthy, be touch-ably soft, full, and shiny!?    While I doubt you’re going to run out and fill your fridge with every item, there’s a good chance that you’ll zero in on the issues you have with your hair fitness and stock up on those.   Eating your way to better hair is easy with the right information.   Don’t forget to print this article out and share it with your friends.  Healthy hair starts from the inside out!   Make sure your internal image reflects health all the way through.
