How to Detox Your Armpits and Why

The benefits of cutting out standard deodorants are endless, they contain heavy metals, chemicals, and ingredients to prevent the natural sweating process that detoxes the body. This process of stopping or reducing sweating is actually harmful to your body. However, detoxing can actually decrease odor and decrease the amount of sweating.  It can also help your body restore your immune system, decreases your chances for breast cancer, and fight other common diseases linked to the chemicals and heavy metals in the deodorants themselves.  This simple recipe to detox your armpits could reduce unsightly bumps, decrease irritation, fight rashes and redness, and increase the bodies own natural ability to fight disease.   We also have our own little surprise for you at the end of this article, so make sure to scroll through!

One of the main reasons I started researching this topic was due to arm swelling.  For a good portion of my life I’ve dealt with excess water retention in my arms.  No matter how hard I worked out, the water retention never seemed to decrease.  While reading over some information online, I decided to test this easy armpit detox.  Couldn’t hurt right?  So, over the last 2 months I cut out standard deodorants, made my own and did this detox along with it.  To my surprise, the water retention began to decrease. Along with that, I felt better, had less brain fog, and seemed to have more energy!

Chemicals and additives in conventional deodorants.

Aluminum (which has been liked to Alzheimer’s)
Phthalates (may cause cancer)
Propylene Glycol
Formaldehyde
Parabens  (may cause cancer)
Antibacterial substances (which can affect the immune system)

Fit Fact: Shaving your under arms actually makes your skin even more permeable.  Meaning, that by removing the hair and a layer of skin with it, you are allowing even more toxins to enter your body.  Since the underarms are filled with lymph nodes, this sensitive area can act as a magnet for drawing chemicals and metals into the body.

The lymph system is connected through out the body. A “bottleneck” in one small area could affect the whole system causing potential swelling, fluid back up, toxins, and possible pain.

This image above shows a painful protruding lump in the underarm.  While you may not have one this evident, if you’ve been using standard deodorants your whole life, you may have some lurking under the surface.  Try palpitating your under arm. You may be able to feel some areas that are tender or feel lumpy.

Why Detox Your Arm Pits?

Antiperspirants can make you smell worse by changing armpit bacteria.
Avoid diseases linked to lymph nodes (such as breast cancer)
Avoid backing up of glands in arm pit which can cause pain, irritation, and unsightly bumps.
Decrease Odor
Decrease sweating

Detox Ingredients

1 Tablespoon of bentonite clay
1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
1-2 teaspoons of water

*Optional: 1-2 sprays of magnesium oil under arms before application. Magnesium oil may burn.  Test a couple drops first before using this option and don’t do this step if you just shaved.

*Don’t use metal for applying this paste. Try to use something free of heavy metals and toxins such as a wood spoon or your hands.

Apply the paste over your arm pits and allow it to sit for 5 – 20 minutes.

You can start with short periods of time in the beginning and work your way up. This will give you time to see how your body reacts. When I began my cleanse it was VERY evident that I was detoxing. I was a bit tired and a little foggy.

Redness can occur but won’t stay long and should dissipate quickly.

Repeat this method daily or whenever you’d like a super detox. Do it until you reach the desired affect.

Fitness Tips: You know those natural deodorants that NEVER work. Well there’s actually a cleansing cycle that happens when you stop using bars and roll on that decrease and prevent sweating! It’s as if your body finally has a chance to BREATH again! It pushes out all the toxins and with it extra sweat. For many, they don’t realize that this is part of the cleansing process. So before the natural deodorant has a chance to work, they’ve switched back to their trusty brand!

 

Making the Switch: How to transition to Natural Deodorants

Once you discover how bad standard deodorants are for your body, it’s likely that you’ll go searching for a healthier option. Fitness Tips: Take your natural deodorant with you during the day and reapply every 3 – 4 hours if necessary.   If you are a workout fiend, use a wash cloth to clean under your arms after your workout and reapply a fresh batch of natural deodorant. You can also shower and reapply more.

    What if it's been months or 2-3 years since you stopped using chemical deodorants and at first you were fine but for the past year or so you've noticed that you have armpit odor everyday and first it started out that it was bad around ovulation and on your flow but now it's all the time as soon as you start to get nervous or sweaty wait for it its coming and there it is an odor. I'm definitely going to try you're suggestions above but I just want to know any tips or ideas you may have about this beyond what you shared. Thank you!

    Sometimes odor has more to do with things that you've eat. Or toxins that you've consumed in some way, shape or form. Drinking more water will flush these out of your system faster. I understand your concern. In my experience, increasing my water in take seemed to combat this affect.

    Thank you for the detailed article! I've been using natural deodorants for the last 18 days and things started out okay. First few days were good and clear. Around the end of day 3 it started to burn! Like bad! I read that I should wait a while before putting deodorant on after shaving so I've been doing that now. Around the end of the first week I saw a lump like a small marble under one armpit. I did a little research and saw that it could be a sign of detoxing. But now I'm 18 days in and both armpits have multiple small marble like lumps under each arm. I'm guessing it's swollen lymph nodes? Would the detox paste help calm the lumps? Could this be extended signs of the detox or possible allergy? I'm debating a trip to the Dr if they don't calm down as they're rather painful and a bit scary looking. A little pit-history... I've never had any sensitivity in my underarms. I shave every day and have never experienced razor burn, never seen a lump, never had wetness or dryness. I also used regular deodorant with aluminum and talc 1-2 times a day.. the more the better! After about 5 previous attempts at making the switch I finally committed and made it this far and don't want to go back. Any advice would be so appreciated!

    GQ - odor can also be bacteria - make sure you are choosing a natural deodorant that has high amounts of anti bacterial ingredients - such as coconut oil and lavender. Your deodorant should also include ingrediants to help with absorption such as arrow root and baking soda. We created a natural deodorant to withstand all of these things.     It sounds like your body is trying very hard to detox. Do not use talc anymore. I would use a very absorbent natural deodorant that has arrow root to help keep you dry. I would really recommend testing our products out because they have charcoal, and clay to help draw out the toxins on a daily basis. Go to: everydayessence.shop to find all of our scents.

    Dre- I've been having the same problem. I stopped using antiperspirant about a month ago and started a new natural deodorant about 2 weeks ago. I just realized I have 2 lumps under my 1 armpit and they are sore. Did you find a resolution to this? I love the idea of switching to a healthier version of body care so I dont want to give up.
