The Secret To The New Seahawks Team – Pete Carroll Instills Yoga and Meditation

I am a native Washington resident that migrated south into California.   It’s not a big secret that the Seahawks team has made a huge turn around.   Growing up in Washington they, weren’t a winning team.   Their bug come back can be attributed to the new California coach Pete Carroll and his dynamic and holistic approach to football.

The Seahawks have one of the most intimidating defensive lines in the NFL, along with some “new techniques.”  Some of these techniques were revealed in a recent article in ESPN Magazine that all players must take yoga class and meditate.

“I wanted to find out if we went to the NFL and really took care of guys, really cared about each and every individual, what would happen?” Pete told ESPN.

 

This relaxed and centered approach has allowed players to get to the finals, beating the 49’s over the weekend.  Offensive line man Russell Okung has nothing but good things to say about the program.  He now says that meditation is one of the most important parts of his daily training.

 

“Meditation is as important as lifting weights and being out here on the field for practice,” Okung said. “It’s about quieting your mind and getting into certain states where everything outside of you doesn’t matter in that moment. There are so many things telling you that you can’t do something, but you take those thoughts captive, take power over them and change them (source).”

If that’s not reason enough to start centering in yourself with yoga and meditation then I don’t know what is!    You can also use this to control you eating habits, or to help you visualize a healthier body.   There are a lot of people who have trouble calming their mind so they can focus on getting better and calming down.   Find some great, free guided meditations on iTunes and google some yoga studios.  If the Seahawks can do it then so can you!
