Workout Like the Stars of Orange is the New Black – Part 1

Orange is the New Black has quickly become one of America’s most controversial Netflix shows.   Viewers become so addicted that they were literally counting down the days until season 3 was released.   It was also clear to see that all members of the cast seemed to have leaned up and dropped inches from season one to the now season two.  I decided to look into their workout routines and give readers the inside scoop on what keeps these women prison lean for their on screen characters.

 

Piper – Taylor Schilling

While this isn’t Taylor’s first big role, it’s now becoming her most memorable (to date).   Taylor loves her leaning cardio classes, yoga and pilates.  She also has the occasional trainer to help her out here and there.   Here’s what she told the L.A. Times

 “I practice yoga a couple of times a week. A year ago, I started doing Pilates. Sometimes I work out with a trainer. I do Spin classes but prefer going with a friend. Living by the Hudson River, every day I try to walk or run outside.”

While researching further we found a short interview with her on Shape Magazine.   She prefers to think of her overall health instead of just “looking good.” That’s why she’s conscious of how she eats.  She avoids sugar, and tries to eat whole foods.

 

Crazy Eyes – Uzo Aduba

Uzo definitely shed some weight fast from season one to season three.  While you may not know it, Uzo is actually a very serious athlete!  She was a figure skater for 10 years, a division one athlete for track in college, a marathoner, and now a triathlete.  Watch her video below and be inspired.

Nicky – Natasha Lyonne

While her role as Nicky sometimes mimics her previous brush with drugs and death, this OITNB character is happy to be alive.  In 2012, she underwent heart surgery following her stay in rehab in 2005 and 2006.   This was due to hepetitis C, a lung infection, and a heart infection.

“Believe me, there’s no shortage of things for me to draw on when it comes to Nicky’s backstory. But while I was filming a hospital scene [when Nicky undergoes open heart surgery after an overdose] it was weird because I had been through something so similar, but had almost nothing to draw on,” Natasha explained to People.

“I had my surgery for the same reason, as a result of drug use. But Nicky’s feeling was, ‘God, I’m still not dead yet?’ For me, I had already been doing a pretty decent job of clean living before the procedure. I was like, ‘Gosh, I really hope this doesn’t take me out.’ I’m grateful I’m okay.” (source)

While resources of her exercise routines are slim.   She does admit to taking biking classes (not spin class, biking).  Here’s a short clip of her explaining her most recent biking class.

 

Alex – Laura Prepon

   I read a lengthy article that Laura did for an organic magazine after season 1.  In it she talks about cutting her sugar, eating extremely clean and getting rid of dairy and gluten.   Her clear skin, and ageless complexion are a very accurate mirror of how she treats her body internally.

“I eat super clean and am always watching what I eat,” the tenacious TV star admits. “I always have really fresh, hormone-free, additive-free chicken,healthy veggies and brown rice in the fridge to grab because I’m always on the go.” (source)

To burn off some extra calories Laura stays active with a variety of cardio such as spin class, running with her 130lb dog, weights, and pilates.   While Laura may look like the naturally thin type, she’s actually quite the exercise junkie.

“I’m the type of person that will do triple sessions in one day,” the tall thespian reveals. “I’ll do Pilates, I’ll do spinning, and then I’ll go to the gym and do weights —which is insane.”  (Source)

 

Daya – Dascha Palanco

While Dayas character on screen has been growing over the seasons, her real life body is actually leaning up!   She candidly admits that life as a single mom hasn’t been easy.  Also, the loss of her mom before landing this role had a huge impact on her mental health.  Now she’s come to a new point in her life where she accepting her body and her curves.

 

There’s no mention that we can find on her fitness routine but we love that she’s embracing her new life and curves.
