The Benefits of DMSO

July 12, 2016 by Adria Ali Leave a Comment

DMSO has been around since the 60’s and was brought to light by an OHSU doctor.  However, very few people know what it is, what it does, and how amazing it really is!  DMOS is by product of the paper making process.  Since it’s a natural by product of wood, it can’t be “approved” or “disapproved” by the FDA.  My friend Linda, turned me on to it recently and it’s made a huge difference in my bad knees, skin, and any ailment I conjure up to use it on!  Don’t just take my word for it read this personal case studies to get a better idea of what DMSO can do for you.

DMSO benefits

Before I get into some of the case studies, here are some ways DMSO is traditionally used.

DMSO is used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, and muscle and skeletal injuries. DMSO is also used topically to treat painful conditions such as headache, inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe facial pain called tic douloureux. It is used topically for eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, and problems with the retina; for foot conditions including bunions, calluses, and fungus on toenails; and for skin conditions including keloid scars and scleroderma. It is sometimes used topically to treat skin and tissue damage caused by chemotherapywhen it leaks from the IV that is used to deliver it. DMSO is used either alone or in combination with a drug called idoxuridine to treat pain associated with shingles(herpeszoster infection) (source).

The history of DMSO as a pharmaceutical began in 1961, when Dr. Jacob was head of the organ transplant program at Oregon Health Sciences University. It all started when he first picked up a bottle of the colorless liquid. While investigating its potential as a preservative for organs, he quickly discovered that it penetrated the skin quickly and deeply without damaging it. He was intrigued. Thus began his lifelong investigation of the drug (source).

DMSO Personal Case Study 1:  Joints

DMSO for joint pain

I purchased DMSO on amazon.  Once it arrived I followed Linda’s instructions and first applied magnesium oil to the affected area.  In this case it was my knee.  I washed my hands well (with natural soaps) and used a towel that was washed with natural detergent.  I poured a small amount, about the size of a nickel into the palm of my hand.  You will notice that it actually gets warm as you’re pouring.  Rub it over the top of the magnesium oil and allow it to sink in.  Wait 20 – 30 minutes before covering it with any clothing. I only use clean cotton clothing which works well for night time wear.  If you can avoid putting anything on the area for prolonged periods of time, that would be best!

I’ve been doing this process everyday for the past 5 days and I’ve seen a remarkable difference in my knees.  Less swelling, less grinding and less pain.

DMSO CASE STUDY 2: Strained Muscle and Muscle Recovery

DMSO and muscle recovery

Since DMSO increases circulation, and speeds up recovery, I placed it on sore muscles and a strained quad muscle.  Within 5 days the horrible strained muscle (that kept getting re-injured with daily tasks) had calmed down and began to heal.  On day 6, it’s about 75% gone!  I’m looking forward to doing cardio again YAY!

As for my knees, I’ve read that DMSO can actually help to regenerate the joint and ligaments.  For that reason I have been placing it over areas that I know have heavy scare tissue, and stiff ligaments.   I will post a follow up in several months to let you know how that works.   So far it’s helped with flexibility. It’s increased by about 12%, if I was to give it a number.

DMSO Case Study 3:  My Dad ….. Dropped a Heavy Stone Vase on His Big Toe

DMSO to increase healing

When this happened (2 days ago), it was clear that the nail on his big toe was turning purple, filling with blood and was going to be extremely painful to drain. It was so bad, he feared they would have to drill a hole in his nail to drain the fluid.  However, my mom had DMSO.  She had him prop his foot up. She applied a mixture of half magnesium oil, and half DMSO.  Using a cotton ball, she applied the mix on top of the nail and under the nail as much as possible.  The toe actually turned a slightly lighter color (which may have been from the magnesium oil).  Two days later, the toe and nail have healed 75%!   No painful nail drilling, and no swelling!

DMSO Case Study 4: Skin / Scaring / Stretch Marks

After researching online I saw that a lot of people were using this product for skin discoloration, stretch marks, and scares.  So, I decided to test this out with a 50/50 mix of magnesium oil and DMSO.  The face is more sensitive so it’s important that you mix it.  If you have extremely sensitive skin, you may want to do a 30 / 70 mixture.  30% DMSO, 70% magnesium oil.  After using this for 5 days the sun spots on my face and some additional scaring on my face have decreased by 50 percent!   Keep in mind, I’ve been using other “fading” products for the past 5 months.  DMSO put this product to shame!  I’ll be using this instead!

DMSO

Currently, this is the brand I’m using.  You can purchase it in the Fit Tip Amazon store here. It’s reasonably priced and should last 1  – 2 months depending upon how often you apply it.

How to Use DMSO Safely and Effectively

DMSO can be a “hit or miss” situation.  So, for that reason I would start out by buying a small bottle.  Some people of lighter decent don’t do well but it’s really dependent upon the person. DMSO can create a burning sensation.  For some, that burning only lasts for about 3 – 5 minutes and dissipates.  Personally, it only burns when I apply it to more sensitive skin areas.  This lessened when I took the advice from Linda to mix it with magnesium oil.  You can also dilute it with water and spray it on affected areas.

How to use DMSO

WARNING:  Do not use plastic gloves, or latex when applying this product, use your bare hands.  DMSO has the ability to PULL anything on top of the skin into the body (this includes perfumes, dyes, toxins, chemical, etc.)

DMSO will absorb chemicals, scents, and toxins so steer clear of them for 3 hours after using this product.  Don’t apply the solution, and go to work cleaning the house with bleach and other harsh chemicals, as your body’s more apt to absorb the toxins into your cells.

For this reason I also believe that it’s best to buy it in a dark glass bottle.  However, many products on the market use #2 plastic containers which are supposed to be less toxic.

Fitness Tips: If you don’t have “natural” detergent to wash towels in, just run the clean towels through a load with some vinegar to strip the chemicals out naturally.

If you’ve tried everything (like me), and you haven’t found a solution that works, it may be time to give DMSO a try!  Even if this product helps you to cut back on pain pills, and helps you to increase your activity, it’s worth the time and small amount of money!
