Is Your Scale Deceiving You?

August 23, 2013 by Adria Ali Leave a Comment

Scales

I try not to get on the scale too much. I was getting on my scale every day for a while, but I decided to not be so OCD and leave the scale alone for a bit.

Well, last week I had a not so pleasant visitor, a stomach virus. It was not fun. Basically, I was nauseous a lot and couldn’t eat much of anything. Well, after my stomach guest left, I got on my scale and I had lost weight. This was great news! I haven’t seen those numbers in years! Since I had lost a couple of pounds, I thought: “I’m eating ANYTHING and everything today!”

The next morning, I got on my scale just to see those numbers from the day before and I had GAINED 4 pounds in 1 day! WTFWTFWTFWTFWTFWTFWTF?!?!

I didn’t let this ruin my day because I had literally ate everything the day before so I thought, “It’s mostly water and sodium.”

Well, I was right, a few days later I was back down, not to the ridiculously low numbers I had first seen, but close to, and at that moment I realized the reason I weighed so little the day after being sick was because I was dehydrated. DUH! I had no water, or anything in my body really. Double DUH!

This leads me to some healthy scale tips that I have come to after my fiasco.

FitTip #1

DON’T way yourself everyday. You’re not a wrestler or a boxer trying to make a certain weigh in weight. Weighing yourself everyday leads to obsessive manners and your weight will not fluctuate every day, unless you got a stomach virus and your water weight and sodium levels go from extremes like they did for me, so let’s all learn from my asinine “weight loss” story above.

FitTip #2

DON’T weigh yourself after a workout. Unless you want to document before and after work out hydration levels, you’ll probably always weigh a little less after a work out.

FitTip #3

Eat a well balanced diet. When you eat less than 1,200 calories your body retains more water. The only way to really loose weight the healthy way, is to eat balanced meals with carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein.

AND don’t stop drinking water. Drink A LOT of water. I think we should all take that away from my mishap. Drinking water helps get rid of all those toxins that we accumulate from food and our environment. Less water intake does not mean less weight, quite the opposite!

Drink up,
Bianca
