We’ve been warned about obesity, diabetes, heart disease, drugs, drinking, and smoking; but no one ever warned us of the affects of sitting! Preliminary research is now showing that sitting sends deadly signals to your body, shutting down genes that regulate body fat and glucose levels.
If you think your saved by your daily routine at the gym, think again! This study claims that even people who workout regularly can still be at risk based on their sitting habits. To counter act the sitting, professionals say that people who have seated occupations would actually benefit more if they spread their physical activity through out the day.
This research was preformed in Canada on 17,000 people who all had sedentary occupations and the result their health over 12 years.
Figures from a U.S. survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars (source).
To avoid weight gain and stop the modification of genes it’s best to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time as much as possible! There are always going to be those times when you aren’t able to leave your chair, but knowledge that is derived from studies like these can keep you from gaining weight or help you lose weight. Thus, changing the way your body perceives your activity.
