7 Health Benefits of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

August 19, 2015 by Adria Ali Leave a Comment

High intensity interval training (HIIT) offers numerous health benefits compared to other methods of exercising. High intensity interval training as you likely already know involves working out to your maximum ability in short bursts, followed by short periods of resting. The workouts are generally a lot shorter than most others, and they are very efficient and convenient even for the busiest of people.

There are dozens of health benefits as well. HIIT increases your natural HGH production, it’s a more efficient workout for burning calories, and much more.

7 of the top health benefits of High Intensity Interval Training Workouts

Benefit # 1- You keep burning calories for hours

You continue to burn calories for hours after a high intensity interval training session. With aerobic workouts, the calories you burn stop almost soon after your exercise session is over. With HIIT you continue to burn calories up to two hours or more afterward, which means that you burn more in total.

Benefit #2 – It’s good for your cardiovascular system

Studies have shown that just 90 minutes of HIIT can reduce aortic stiffness, which affects blood flow through the arteries. The process of exerting yourself and resting helps to strengthen your heart through a process called ventricular remodeling, which improves the output of your heart. After just a few weeks of HIIT you will find that you can do the same workouts as before, a lot more easily.

insulin resistance

Benefit #3 – It improves your insulin sensitivity

Reduced insulin sensitivity is one of the metabolic precursor for diabetes and a host of other health problems. HIIT has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity after just a few sessions and makes the body more efficient at processing glucose.

Benefit #4 – It burns more fat

Your body actually burns more fat when you participate in high intensity interval training. The effect is dramatic, and you will very likely notice that any fat that you’ve struggled to lose will start to disappear with regular HIIT workouts.

Benefit #5 – It improves your endurance

Studies have found that after only 8 HIIT workouts participants could bike twice as long as they could prior to starting the training. It has a dramatic effect at increasing your endurance for working out rather quickly, which means that you can do more work in a shorter period of time.

HIIT workouts

Benefit #6 – HIIT workouts preserve lean muscle mass

Another major benefit of HIIT is that it preserves your muscle mass compared to long aerobic exercises. Studies have shown that HIIT combined with weight training can help you burn fat and lose calories while keep your lean body mass, which is very important to your overall health.

Benefit #7 – It boosts HGH production

You need to maintain a high HGH production level throughout your life to ensure that you remain healthy. HGH helps protect your bones and organs from deterioration, and it also helps to keep you lean and avoid weight gain as you get older. HIIT increases both HGH and IGF-1 production up to 771% during a strenuous workout, and the boost continues for several hours after the workout is finished (source).

You don’t always have to spend HOURS at the gym.   Using HIIT training can help you achieve a stronger, healthier body in a fraction of the time.  Here’s one of our previous HIIT workout routines, use these fitness tips to get the most out of your workout routine!
