In the war against obesity, fast food chains and restaurants have added healthy options to their menu. The outstanding problem is that in order to preserve the salads and maintain colors, they have added chemicals. While researching, it was plain to see that fast food salads aren’t touched on very much. Are they somehow protected by the fast food giants? The main evidence comes from one of the largest chains, McDonalds.
I always wondered why eating salads from fast food restaurants left me feeling HORRIBLE. My efforts to eat on the run while still watching my calories was a total wash due to the bloating that followed. My fingers began to swell, my stomach was larger then before and I seemed to be slightly agitated. Sure, my common sense said they weren’t “regular” salads. However, I scraped off the cheese, and used minimal dressing to try to balance out my meal in a healthy way.
McDonalds chicken salad is a good example. The cilantro lime glaze and the orange glaze that is spread on the chicken contains propylene glycol — a chemical that is not legal to use in cat food because its safety has not yet been proven. Propylene glycol is also the #1 chemical used in electronic cigarettes as a laxative! Propylene glycol is also used as the chemical to capture ground beetles. This chemical is responsible for keeping your lettuce crispy and your veggies full of color (it’s also in anti freeze). It gets worse. These salads also contain two substances, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate. Also known as MSG.
No matter how much you spin it, these fast food salads are horrible for your health! You’d be better off going to the market and buying your own salad and precooked meat from Trader Joe’s. Avoiding the drive throughs all together helps you avoid diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and possibly anxiety disorders! Don’t take your health for granted, stay on a schedule and make sure you always have healthy options with you, in your car, at work, and in your home.
